Tours
I offer you to visit one of the most attractive areas in the historical Madrid. In our tour we can pass by the PLAZA MAYOR, cultural and commercial centre of Madrid in the XVII century. It was used for all kind of shows, from bullfighting to theatre, competitions, market or even “auto da fe”. We can also visit the PLAZA DE LA VILLA, small square with some buildings dating from the XVI to the XIX century. In the middle of this square we have the statue of Mr. Alvaro de Bazán, the invincible admiral of the famous “Armada” of the king Philip II. The PLAZA DE ORIENTE has now one of the most beautiful gardens in the city. Is presided by the famous statue of the king Philip IV, the first in the world with the two front legs of the horse on the air. In the PLAZA DE LA ENCARNACIÓN continues with its functions of monastic life the monastery of barefoot augustinian sisters of the Incarnation. We can also visit the PLAZA DE LA PROVINCIA, where we can find the old Prison of the Aristocrats, the siege today of the Foreign Office.
We can start visiting some parts of the ARAB WALLS dating from the IX century, the oldest archaeological remainings that we have preserved in the city. In the PLAZA DE LA PAJA the taxes were payed by the farmers. Also the straw property of the priests of the neighbouring CAPILLA DEL OBISPO was sold in there. Adjacent, in the famous CAPILLA DE SAN ISIDRO, the uncorrupted body of San Isidro, the patron saint of the city, is been preserved many centuries. The bells of the medieval SAN PEDRO’S CHURCH were played during the season of the recollection of the crop to avoid the clouds and preserve the farming. The name of the PLAZA DE LA CRUZ VERDE comes from the use of a big green cross that the Holy Office would use during the “autos”. The quarter of the MORERÍA preserves the arab urbanism of very narrow and hilly streets. The old parish church of SAN NICOLÁS, with its mudéjar tower from the XII century, is the oldest Christian building in the city.
The centre of the Madrid of the writers can be considered the PLAZA DE SANTA ANA, where the present Teatro Español is standing in the same place of an old theatre from the XVII century. The madrilenians at that time used to spend many hours a week in the theatre, trying to forget their poverty. Next to that one, there was another theatre, the TEATRO DE LA CRUZ. Each theatre had their own fans, who would consider themselves enemies of the fans of the other theatre, like football supporters nowadays. Occupping the space of the old cemetery of the CHURCH OF SAN SEBASTIÁN, where Lope de Vega has been buried, there’s recently been a shop of plants for many years. Miguel de Cervantes, the writer of Don Quijote de la Mancha, also lived in this quarter. The little STREET OF QUEVEDO is a street of only one block, where he lived next to his important competitor Luis de Góngora. Recently opened to the public, the HOUSE and MUSEUM OF LOPE DE VEGA is a beautiful example of a building of the XVII century.
Another entertainment of the madrilenians in the XVIII century was to walk up and down the PASEO DEL PRADO. For the wealthiest, on a carriage or on horse. This is the reason why the king Charles III ordered to decorate it with fountains: CIBELES, APOLLO, NEPTUNE and ARTICHOKE FOUNTAINS. Also this king decided to build the PRADO MUSEUM as Natural Science Museum. This is the reason why we can find next the BOTANICAL GARDEN, especially nice to visit during the month of May, when most of the roses and other flowers are flourished. Some buildings of the XVIII century remain, like the PALACIO DE BUENAVISTA, ancient property of the Duchess of Alba and Headquarters of the Army nowadays; or the famous PUERTA DE ALCALÁ, built not only for decorative reasons but also to collect taxes. But also in the XIX century some important buildings have been built, such us the BANCO DE ESPAÑA, where the 24 karat gold ingots are storaged. Or more recently in the XIX century the old siege of the POST OFFICE, recently converted into the new City Hall of Madrid.
If you have private transportation with driver (or ir you prefer so I can give you the contact for one); or if you prefer to move by taxi; or you are a group and you have your own bus. In any of these cases I offer you a panoramic tour of Madrid. Get ready to visit the PLAZA DE ESPAÑA with the famous monument to Don Quijote and Sancho Panza. The TEMPLO DE DEBOD, brought from Egypt stone by stone, is one of the favorite places for the madrilenians to admire the sunset. We will share the tropical garden of the old train station of ATOCHA with other busy travelers. The PASEO DEL PRADO, with its three hundred years old chestnut and plane trees is probably the nicest all over the city. The CIBELES, NEPTUNE, APOLLO fountains are visible symbols in the city. The PARQUE DEL RETIRO offers us geometrical perspectives in its entrances. The PUERTA DE ALCALÁ is quite probably the most monumental of all the european gates in the XVIII century. The SALAMANCA district combines some of the most chic buildings with very prestigious fashion shops. The bullring of LAS VENTAS is an excellent example of new mudéjar architecture. In the PASEO DE LA CASTELLANA we will appreciate the combination of ancient villas and the most modern architecture in the city: the four towers of the old sportive area of the Real Madrid with heights arriving up to 250 meters. In the PLAZA DE COLÓN it was made an homage to the american continent in the 60’s.
The collection of the Prado Museum was started as a private collection by the Royal Family during several centuries. This is the reason why the most represented school with many of the best works is the SPANISH SCHOOL: El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Murillo, Ribera… Also some members of the Royal Family were fascinated by the VENETIAN SCHOOL: Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese… and the FLEMISH SCHOOL: Bosch, Brueghel, Roger van der Weyden, Rubens… You can visit in the museum the masterpieces or you can choose any of the schools or a concrete author.
